Why does CDN.net exist?

If you’ve ever considered implementing a CDN, it was probably a frustrating experience.

If you try to buy a CDN ‘out of the box’, for example, you can expect to pay an exorbitant fee to one of the big service providers, but all you’re likely to receive is a service that’s similar to the Model T Ford – there’s one specification, one colour, and you either purchase it or you don’t. As a result you can end up paying for resources you may or may not need, while for any kind of customisation – in terms of locations, traffic, bandwidth etc. – you have to pay even more. And you’ll almost certainly find yourself tied into a long-term contract, further limiting your flexibility.

Our vision for CDN.net is the complete opposite of this approach. It’s that you should be able to provision a highly customised service ‘on the fly’, which you can match to your individual needs and personalise in exactly the way you want.

It might be, for example, that you’re operating a variety of different websites, and want to optimise the customer experience for each, according to their target audience.

Or you could have a time-based project for which you need to handle a peak load during a certain period or at specific locations.

Or you may want to deploy or expand a network across South America, or choose particular cities worldwide in which you want to establish local Points of Presence (PoPs).

Whatever you want to do, CDN.net lets you customise your service at a granular level, and have it priced accordingly. The reason we can do this is that as a federated network, CDN.net offers much more diversity and many more attributes than a wholly-owned network, giving you the opportunity to use all the different aspects of our marketplace to your advantage – whether it’s locations, performance, redundancy, availability, service levels, and so on.

Think of it like this...

You could walk or ride a bicycle, but although both are relatively cheap, they take a lot of time and effort.

You could catch a bus – which we see as the traditional service provider model, as it involves many compromises. You have to get to the bus stop, and once you’re on it there’s only one route you can take. You could end up visiting a whole load of places you don’t want to along the way, and even when you get off again you still may not be at your final destination.

If you have the money you could buy a car – in the same way that you can own your own data centre. A car gives you the flexibility to go anywhere you like, but you still have the responsibility of owning it, putting fuel in it and running it, which you may not be able to afford.

So what about a taxi? You can tell the driver exactly where you want to go, it takes you straight there, and you just pay as you go. That’s what you get with our Self Service package.

Or how about a chauffeur-driven service? You book it in advance and everything is taken care of for you – which you’ll soon be able to access through our Assisted packages.

All of which begs the question, why would you wait for a bus when you can pay less for a taxi or your own personal chauffeur?

How do I get it?
